Are you feeling the Bern (again)? Bernie Sanders set to announce 2020 presidential run

Well, would you look at that, a story about Bernie Sanders, the most popular politician in the US right now, possibly announcing he's running for president in the 2020 election just dropped last night.

Quote

Two sources with direct knowledge of his plans told Yahoo News that Sanders, an independent and self-described “democratic socialist,” plans to announce his presidential bid imminently. While Sanders has been considering a bid for months, one of the sources said he was emboldened by early polls of the race that have consistently showed him as one of the top candidates in a crowded Democratic primary field. In particular, the source said Sanders was heartened to see numbers indicating he is one of the leading candidates among African American and Latino voters, two groups he was perceived as struggling with in 2016.

A Politico story from earlier this January shows that the Bernie campaign is already staffing up and preparing for an even bigger digital election campaign than last time around when his campaign absolutely crushed everyone else on social media.

Bernie Sanders is adding firepower to his political team ahead of a potential 2020 campaign, locking down digital alumni who were key to his surprise performance in 2016 and recruiting the media production company that helped launch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to prominence.

[...] Sanders’ videos had nearly 1.5 billion views in 2017 and 2018 on Facebook — almost three times more than all other potential 2020 Democratic candidates’ videos combined, according to the report. He also outpaced other possible contenders in Facebook interactions.

I'm sure the Trump campaign are shitting their pants right now because as you might remember, and as Salon rightly points out, Bernie Sanders would have easily beaten Trump in an election.

In the wake of the 2016 election, numerous polls revealed that, had Sanders been the Democratic nominee for president in 2016, he would have handily defeated Trump.

Oh man oh man! Bernie Sanders has apparently recorded a new campaign video in which he says he is running for president in 2020, Politico reports.

Another hint that Sanders is getting closer to a launch: The Sanders team has been interviewing people for top staff positions, POLITICO reported this week. Chuck Rocha, a political consultant who advised Sanders’ 2016 campaign, is expected to join him again if a second bid materializes.

It is unclear when, or whether, the Sanders video would be released.

Go get em, Bernie!

Today Bernie Sanders announced that he is running for US president in 2020! Bernie Sanders made the announcement on Vermont Public Radio:

Quote

"I wanted to let the people of the state of Vermont know about this first," Sanders told VPR's Bob Kinzel. "And what I promise to do is, as I go around the country, is to take the values that all of us in Vermont are proud of — a belief in justice, in community, in grassroots politics, in town meetings — that's what I'm going to carry all over this country."

Sanders also said he is running to oppose Donald Trump and to enact universal health care coverage, a $15 minimum wage and reducing student debt — all policies that he championed in 2016.

Quote

"I think the current occupant of the White House is an embarrassment to our country," Sanders said. "I think he is a pathological liar... I also think he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, a xenophobe, somebody who is gaining cheap political points by trying to pick on minorities, often undocumented immigrants."

Shortly afterwards this campaign video was posted online:

Go, Bernie, Go! 😊
